Five Shot Rule

five shot rule:

For each subject of interest, get one shot that's far away enough to show everything (wide); get a second shot that is close enough to see what's going on (medium); get a third shot that's very close (tight).
The order (optionally) is ECU(Hand), ECU(Face), Wide, OTS and creative shot.
Beginners can follow these instructions, but the results are not always good. Part of the trouble is that everyone judges these distances differently.
The five-shot method is more useful for beginners. By following it, the students bring back better shots. As a result, their first efforts are editing are also better. They learn more quickly to shoot usable video.

Legal and Ethical

Legal and Ethical

What does 'copyright' mean ?

The exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film (etc)

Give three examples of different things which you might include in your video and could be subject to copyright:

  1. Logos
  2. Narration (If self-made)
  3. Background music (If self-made)
  4. The film itself

List two websites that give copyright free music:

  1. iStockphoto.com
  2. Foter.com

Explain what a location release form is and why is it needed for filming?

Location release is a binding contract between the photographer and the owner of a private property whereby the owner of the property grants written permission to shoot a movie, video, commercial (etc.) of the owner's property. This agreement includes provisions regarding foregoing the owner's right to sue for specific types of claims, allowing producers and team to enter property, releasing any rights to recording of one's property, and potential compensation for use.
It's needed for organization and permission reasons, making it official on the intentions and permission (granting).

What is a contributor release form and why is it required?

A contributor license agreement defines the terms under which intellectual property has been contributed to a company/project, typically software under an open source license.
Contributor License Agreement (CLAs) can be used to enable vendors to easily pursue legal resolution in the case of copyright disputes, or to relicense products from which contributors have been received from third parties. The purpose of a CLA is to ensure that the guardian of a project's output has the necessary ownership or grants of rights over all contributions to allow them to distribute under the chosen license In some cases this will mean that the contributor will assign the copyright in all contributions to the projects owner; in other cases, they will grant on an irrevocable license to allow the project maintainer to use the contributions. CLAs also have roles in raising awareness of IPR issues within the project.

Viral Marketing Analysis

Video: Evian Roller Babies

In the viral marketing video 'Evian Roller Babies' we see a group of babies roller skating, dancing in and out of sync around a neighborhood in their baby grows and miniature skates. The target audience are people who drink water and the video's purpose is to reenact the affects of drinking water (More specifically their own), this can range to any age, but more older people (18+). This is because people under 17 are targeted by other brands of fluid which are more sugar based/unhealthy, but the advert still appeals to all as water is found in more or less everything.

It appeared everywhere from television to youtube, even on blogs (Through streaming) and billboards. The video is in high definition which means the file hasn't been compressed and the frame rates are of high number (Making the video smoother), however the youtube's 'Quality option' means that the quality can be compressed whilst watching for computers that maybe can't handle the high definition. The editing is smooth, the sound is background music (Old school hip-hop). The file format is a '.mov' format; The file contains additional information, probably added from the digital camera or scanner used to create or digitize it. If the file has been modified from its original state, some details may not fully reflect the modified file.

Understand Principles of Digital Video Technology in Interactive Media

Designers use digital video technology to enhance a user’s interactive experience on different platforms (for example: Youtube, Netflix etc.) for online media with two main categories: applications and technologies.
The applications side has a wide variety of uses, starting from media such as short films, promotional material, film trailers and user-generated content all the way to e-learning platforms such as the World Wide Web, email attachments, presentations and mobile devices.
Whereas the technology side focuses more on digital video capture, e.g. digital video file formats (.mpg, .mp4, .mov, .avi, .wmv, .flv etc.) and streaming methods (downloading, progressive downloading and streaming) etc.
User-generated content come in many varieties which are available in many forms, it ranges from pictures or can be taken from a certain category, a game for example, to videos which can also be self-made.
User-generated content can be used to advertise what the creator includes in it, for example, a montage made a video game can be used to advertise the game because it includes what the games like, what’s actually in the game, like maps and weapons, and if the game is popular or not, because if there are a wide variety of montages on the video sharing site that must mean that the game is popular, an example of a video game montage can be found via this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlAfpyzPzxM.
In this video is a User-generated video we see gameplay of the 'call of duty' game. the purpose of it is to display the skill level of the player and maybe promote their 'clan tags' or Console user names to be requested to join a better 'clan' than their current (Clans are gameplay groups; almost like an online gang of people playing the same games) this can help them get promoted in levels etc. The quality is moderate because it isn't in HD, it's slightly pixelated by it is high enough of a quality for us to see what's going on clearly, this most likely means that the file has been compressed before being uploaded.
Another form of advertising is a type of video called viral this is where a video becomes popular through the process of internet sharing, typically through internet media sharing websites, ‘a video, image or text spread by "word of mouth" on the internet or by e-mail for humorous, political or marketing purposes; able to spread copies of itself to other computers’ quoted from: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=active&biw=1024&bih=643&defl=en&q=define:viral&sa=X&ei=P7E2TenmAYexhQfZqI3HAg&ved=0CBoQkAE, such as YouTube, on YouTube people can upload videos they have made which can then get views, where people view the video, this makes it a platform for the viral marketing video. (or any other type of video) The video can also be shared on social networking sites by posting the link in a ‘status’, Facebook being the most popular, people then click on the link which takes them to the video. This is another form of advertising called viral advertising, it could also be called ‘word of mouth’ advertising. This is probably one of the most effective way of advertising for companies/producers because it’s free, and if a friend tells you to watch something you are more than likely going to do it than if a television advert comes on the screen and tells you to. It is also said that small businesses can save money due to the reduced need for a sales force, and because of the low production, distribution and residual costs of a viral campaign internet marketing can help a company expand from a local to international marketplace’.

Analysis of Interactive Videos

Analysis of Interactive Videos:

Example 1:
GINGERS DO HAVE SOULS!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY39fkmqKBM) (Platform for video is Youtube.com)

The video 'GINGERS DO HAVE SOULS!!' shows us a male with ginger hair who uses his self-made video to express his disgust and hatred in detail to the typical stereotype that gingers don't have souls, friends etc. He also shares a few situations he has been in with his audience. Maybe unintentionally, his target audience is cleverly targeted in a way which makes it lovable by everybody as it relates in some way to everybody. This is done because his target audience is ginger people who can relate to him, and people who aren't ginger who do this, also he targeted people who have witnessed or are just curious.
In doing this, he has merged all possible types of viewer which in doing so has made his video so credited.
The purpose of the video is to inform with self expression and create change. However, although that was the creators plan, the end result was closer to comedy and became viral.

The image quality is poor, but visible enough to contribute toward the point he is getting across, the sound quality is decent and clear; nothing extraordinary. There were no obvious form of editing, there were no jump-shots or transitions.

Example 2: Come Dine With Man (www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4wpDqggBqQ) (Platform for video is Youtube.com)

The Video Come Dine With Man is a video show only found on the internet, It is a comedy reenactment of the original hit television show Come Dine With Me; describing the choice of name. It stars the underground up&coming comedians in London. In the comedy, the 4 main actors are challenged with making a meal for their company. However, as it's a comedy, they've added a twist and made abnormal or exaggerated characteristics, attributes and traits. They're target audience are those living in the U.K, people of lower financial positions but their primary audience are just the common(everyday) person. The video is low budgeted, and they have created their characters accordingly and making all 4 one of the common characters your could find in the streets of london.
The purpose of the video is purely comedy and entertainment. They've grasped their audience by making key elements of the video (Characters, scenes, storyline) relatable, which makes the video funny to watch.

The video is HD compatible, and hasn't had any file compression. The sound quality is good, clear and affective. The editing is smooth, crisp and clean. Shot as a .mov file.

Example 3: Meet The Superhumans: 2012 Paralympics  (www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKTamH__xuQ) (Platform for video is Youtube.com)

The viral marketing video Meet The Superhumans is an advert dedicated to tributing and supporting the British paralympic team as well as promoting the event and inspiring their viewers. The advert shows the paralympic athletes doing activities in couragous, hardworking and some what violent manner. In doing this the advert is a display of their patriotism to Great Britain (Team GB) and passion for the event. The target audience are those living in Britain, those who don't see or appreciate the efforts of the athletes and the people who are also patriotic and/or supportive of the athletes. The quality is outstanding, the sound is background music(Classic hip-hop). The music adds an inspirational, proud, 'at home' feeling to the video and adds an original urban feel. The video is shot in HD (.mov), the jumpshots, shots, angles etc are all brilliant and cleverly used to make the audience feel as though they are a part of the experience.

Glossary of Terms

Glossary of Terms

Video Formats, e.g. (.mov, avi): Format meaning the type of programs it can be read by, for example, JPG is used as more of an imagery format used more on photos(Images) and graphics.

Streaming: Is the sending of information which enables you to view or hear something without needing to be at the location it's taking place.

File Compression: File compression is used to reduce the file size of one or more file. When a file or a group of files is compressed, the resulting "archive" often takes up 50% to 90% less disk space than the original file(s). common types of compression include: zip, gzip, RAR, Stufflt, and 7z compression.

Aspect Ratios: 4:3, 16:9: The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between it's width and height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers seperated by a colon, as in 16:9. For an x:y aspect ratio, no matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x-units of equal length and the height is measured using this same length, the height will be measured to be y-units.

Frame Rates: Frame rate (also known as frame frequency) is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. Most often expressed in frames per second(FPS) or progressive scan monitors as hertz (Hz).
