Introduction to editing

The Gloaming

What is editing?
Selecting from different shots, joining them to tell a story.

What is Elliptical editing?
Thistype of editing is usually used to allow the audience to fill in the gap, move the story on more quickly and take up less time on screen.

Why are long shots used?
Long shots are usually used to set the scene, and show the audience the location and what's surrounding the character(s).

What is 'non- diagetic sound'?
Music is playing but character can't hear as it is not playing in the location but would have been added when editing. Therefore the diagetic sound is the natural sound heard in the specific location.

How do we know she is bending down to pick up the ring? (What shots are used and why?)
The shot shows her looking off-screen to the right, then cuts to a shot of the ring buried in the dirt, this indicates that is looking at the ring. It then cuts to a CU of her hand picking up the ring, indicating that was the reason she had bent down.

Hustle
• Overhead establishing shot – what does this achieve?

The director sets out the space in which the scene will take place and the characters position in the room.

• What is Shot-Reverse-Shot?

Cutting back and forth usually during a conversation between two characters assuming they are looking and speaking to each other.

• What is Eye-line matching?

When two characters eyes match so the audience is aware that they are looking at each other.

• Why do we cut to the other members of the group?

So you can see their faces and see the reaction to the plan and to the different characters.

What is a wipe?

To move the action to a different location

What is the effect of using quick cuts?

Creates a fast rhythm, which moves the story along and keeps the audience on their toes.

short evaluation (400 Words)

Evaluation

The comments on my video varied in positivity and negativity, I obtained all 5 comments within a short space (range) of time after posting the video.
They were predominantly and/or consisted of school associates, friends, classmates and peers (Outside).
The task required I go and get 5 comments on my video giving a viewers opinion. This is done to help the maker (Student) improve on their creative media skills to add to their future tasks on the course whilst also providing feedback to help the student (myself) achieve higher standards in work and improve confidence in actually taking part in related projects and tasks.
They were mainly comments of positive remarks regarding the idea, the shots and the concept of the video in itself.

These comments helped me to build my character while filming, my confidence in my own ideas and in my self, they helped me to look deeper than my own opinion when reviewing my work, this enables me to find a more in depth range of positivity and negativity within my work. It also taught me that the course I am on is the right course and has boosted my liking of the learning atmosphere I am in simply because I now know I am in the right place.

I found minor issues and big affects in my video. The issues were only self-opinionated and others claimed my video was very encouraging and very well fit for purpose.
